Update hung / froze at about 30% progress. I left system alone for 24 hours: no change. Clicking 'X' caused update interface to show 'Cancelling.,' but no further changes after 2 hours, so I killed the process via Task Manager. Full system restart was required as prerequisite to re-attempt update.

Brian, the clone operation cannot be performed from within Windows because you will be copying / cloning the whole operating system content.

The most likely reason why 'nothing happens' after you restart the computer is that the default Linux based Acronis rescue media that is used when doing this is not compatible with either your BIOS settings or cannot detect the hardware installed in your system.

The first recommendation to you is to use the Tools > Rescue Media Builder option within the ATIH 2016 GUI to create a bootable CD (or DVD) - you can start by making the first option - Acronis Bootable Rescue Media (Recommended for most users) and try to boot your computer from that media. Large storage bags for comforters.

If you get the same situation with nothing happening, then try the second option to create WinPE based media with the Acronis plug-in - again this can be created on DVD (or on a spare 1GB or larger USB memory stick).

If the WinPE Rescue Media gives the same symptoms, then it is very likely that you will need to change some of the BIOS settings on your system, in particular, to disable the Secure Boot option. If you have a UEFI BIOS system, then you will need to make sure that you are selecting the UEFI CD/DVD drive option and not the Legacy CD/DVD drive if offered.
